Could you be a sex addict?

Sexual addiction is a very real problem for some people that inhibits everyday life. It is more than simply regular, ongoing thoughts of sex. Like all addictions, sufferers can experience a myriad of emotional problems that need to be dealt with.

So how do you know if you are a sex addict in need of help?

Are you a sex addict?

According to the website run by South Pacific Private, sex addiction involves the following emotions and behaviours:

  • Preoccupation: continual fantasies about sexual prospects or situations. This can trigger an episode of sexual “acting-out”.
  • Ritualisation: a preferred sexual activity or situation is often stereotyped and repetitive.
  • Compulsion: continual engagement in sexual activity despite negative consequences and desire to stop.
  • Despair: guilt or shame over their inability to control behaviour or feel remorse.
  • Other behavioural problems, particularly chemical dependency, gambling and eating disorders.

Other symtpoms of sex addiction include:

  • Excessive or compulsive masturbation, with or without the use of pornography.
  • Self-destructive or harmful sexual practise (unsafe sex, self mutilation).
  • Prostitution addiction.
  • Compulsive seeking of multiple sexual partners.

South Pacific Private have an online self-assessment form which can help you determine if you may be addicted to sex.
